The Story

ONLY CHILD is a line of unique basics for women, designed and made by Haley Tucker in a small studio in Oakland, California.  Created in 2015 to fill a desire for wardrobe workhorses, Only Child focuses on remaking basic silhouettes to be anything but boring.  Each piece is made with the idea of having a closet full of pieces ready to be thrown on before you run out the door, knowing that you will not only look great but also feel comfortable and ready to take on the day.

Only Child pieces are made from deadstock textiles in an effort to reduce waste and give leftover fabric a new life.  Working with deadstock fabric suppliers comes with its challenges but it's unpredictable nature means that each collection is unique and every piece is a rare, special item.  Every textile is hand selected to make sure that it not only look great but will feel fantastic, too.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

My name is Haley and I'm the founder and designer behind Only Child.  Currently, I'm a one woman show and design, cut, sew, and ship every piece.  Being so connected to my brand allows me to ensure that everything that goes out the door has been made with care and quality in mind.  It definitely makes things a little extra crazy sometimes, but knowing that something I made with my own two hands is headed out to hopefully make someone's life a little easier makes it so worth it.

I was born in San Diego and am (you guessed it) an only child.  I moved up to the Bay Area five years ago to get my MFA in photography, fell in love with Oakland, and never left.  Once I graduated, I wanted to take a break from the camera but still felt a pull to create.  I started working full time at an upscale gallery and was so inspired by the wardrobes of all of the creative women I saw in the art world.  I used all of that inspiration the second I got home each day to design and sew my own clothes and eventually launched Only Child in 2015.

Photography continues to be one of my greatest sources of inspiration.  I love looking at the wild, saturated color palettes of William Eggleston and the shapes and lines of Serrah Russell's collages.  But mostly, I love the idea of making clothes that allow people the room in their life to be creative, expressive, and above all, themselves.  I hope that you feel this whenever you wear an Only Child piece, ready for your busy day and free to be who you are.
