Monthly Maker: Kira Gulley of Antlers and Honey

Posted on November 03 2016

I'm so excited to kick off this new monthly blog series with such a talented lady!  Monthly Maker is all about getting to know the ins and outs of what it's like being a creative entrepreneur.  I used to get asked all the time about what it's like to not just be a business owner, but a female one as well.  One thing I love so much about the creative world is that there are so many talented women making it happen, it almost feels like a tribe.
.
I first came across Kira through her instagram, @antlersandhoney, and immediately fell in love.  She's an extremely talented artist who focuses on botanical prints, originals, and even temporary tattoos like this one that she's styled with the Olivia Dress:

But what struck me the most was her completely honest and refreshing voice that comes through so clear with each post.  There have been so many times now where she's voiced the ups and downs of being a boss lady that have had me shaking my head in agreement.  In a space that can sometimes feel crushingly over-curated, Kira's presence is like a breath of fresh air.   I've asked her the 5 questions to give a little insight into what makes her tick, check them out below:
.
.
1.  How did Antlers + Honey get started?
.
Antlers+Honey started from a desire to create something that I love. I had always worked in a number of different creative outlets. In each of them I was always producing something based on someone else's vision. Without a doubt it pushed me creatively, but it wasn’t very fulfilling. Eventually I decided to put myself out there and make something that one hundred percent represented me. A few fern watercolors later and Antlers+Honey was born.
.
2.  What are some of your biggest sources for inspiration?
.
I find its so easy to be inspired by nature. The sweet pine scent that fills the air, the velvet softness of the foliage, or the ever changing colors as the sun dances around the day. There is a scencory overload while hiking outdoors that draws you in. Before you know it, you are craving that beauty again and again. When nature if your muse, it feels like there is a never ending source of inspiration. It is ever changing leaving me with something new to discover every time.
.
3.  Describe a typical day at work and an ideal day off:
.
As an artist there is a lot of flexibility with my schedule. Most often it is based around what projects I am currently working on. That can be anything from painting new pieces to collaborating with other companies. Since everyday is different I work my way down a checklist to help organize my hectic schedule. Once all of the check marks are made on my to-do list, I try to carve a little me time in everyday by jumping into my yoga practice. It's the least I can do to unwind and recenter daily after a packed work day.
.
If I do get a solid day off Ill more then likely be outdoors somewhere. Luckily living in Southern California there is wonderful wilderness in every direction. Whether that be wandering the warm desert of Joshua Tree National Park, strolling through the pines of San Grogonio, or taking in the salty breeze at Malibu State Park. These mini trips with friends and family inspire me, refuel me, and energize me for the next working day.
.
4.  What are 5 things you can't live without?
.
My husband- he is my adventure partner, and no one makes me laugh harder.
Creating- it's a huge part of me, it's a needed outlet for my happiness.
Tea- because I'm addicted to all tea, all day, everyday!
Hiking- being out in nature makes me feel alive.
Traveling- no matter how close or far, I love exploring new places.
.
5.  Who are some of your style icons?
.
Oh man, this is a tough one. Mostly because I tend to dress in a variety of different styles simply because I like it, not because someone else is wearing it. But I must say that the Olsen sisters have been my girls since I was a young! I love the mix of boho and modern that they always seem to pull off so well. To be honest, I always wished that I was their sister growing up watching them on T.V.!
